Final Fantasy XIV already gets a lot of credit for taking fans of the series back to simpler times, but I didn’t think Square Enix could out do themselves any further. Boy, was I wrong! With the 8 and 16-bit lore already extensively covered in the last two expansions, Stormblood is taking us back to Ivalice.

Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood sounds like the stuff of dreams

Final Fantasy XIV already gets a lot of credit for taking fans of the series back to simpler times, but I didn’t think Square Enix could out do themselves any further. Boy, was I wrong! With the 8 and 16-bit lore already extensively covered in the last two expansions, Stormblood is taking us back to Ivalice.

Yes, none other than the fan-favorite setting in Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XII will be explorable in the hottest MMORPG on the market. Ivalice is a world fans always wish to go back to, and that’s just where they are going in Stormblood, as announced by Square Enix during its keynote speech today in Japan.

The entire expansion won’t take place in Ivalice, but the single dungeon raid there will be designed by Yasumi Matsuno himself, the writer, director, and designer of Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XII. Square Enix offered no further details.

Nobuo Uematsu is back to write a few more tracks, the Red Mage job class is making a long overdue appearance in the game, and Square Enix’s latest mechanic is the addition of diving and underwater combat.

Final Fantasy XIV captures the series’ essence better than any other

I love Final Fantasy XV, but I would be wrong if I said it did a better job capturing the spirit of Final Fantasy than its online sibling. Square Enix’s online hit looks and sounds a lot more like the classic games in the series, and it tells its stories in a much more similar manner. I don’t think it’s a better game, not at all, but fans who have blown it off because it requires a subscription fee should really just go for it.

If the return to Ivalice isn’t enough, what is?

Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood will be released for the PlayStation 4 and PC on June 20, 2017.

Am I missing something about Dark Knight?

Paladin get block, WAR get parry + self healing, Dark Knight get worse self healing...and nothing else. I feel like they need something here, just to smooth out autoattack damage.
